چکیده

The development of Aspergillus flavus inoculation techniques has played an important part in developing corn (Zea mays L.) germplasm resistant to aflatoxin contamination. Corn genotypes evaluated for aflatoxin resistance in field studies must be artificially inoculated due to the sporadic nature of aflatoxin contamination from year to year. A number of different inoculation techniques are used by researchers in the South and Midwest. Field inoculation techniques either wound *Correspondence: Gary L. Aflatoxin Production in Corn by Aspergillus flavus Relative to Inoculation, Planting Date, and Harvest Moisture in Louisiana

Corn produced in the southeastern United States has higher levels of aflatoxin than corn produced in the Corn Belt states of the Midwest (Zuber et al.,1976). Because corn acreage has increased recently in Louisiana, there is a growing concern among corn producers regarding levels of aflatoxin in their grain. Although the most effective control of A. flavus and aflatoxin contamination is through...

Using biotechnology to enhance host resistance to aflatoxin contamination of corn

Host resistance is the most widely explored strategy for eliminating aflatoxin contamination by Aspergillus flavus. Breeding strategies for developing resistant corn germplasm have been enhanced by the development of new screening tools for field inoculation and for laboratory screening. RFLP analysis of corn populations has highlighted the possibility that different resistance traits can be su...

Biocontrol of aflatoxin in corn by inoculation with non-aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus isolates

The ability of two non-aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus Link isolates (CT3 and K49) to reduce aflatoxin contamination of corn was assessed in a 4-year field study (2001 2004). Soil was treated with six wheat inoculant treatments: aflatoxigenic isolate F3W4; two non-aflatoxigenic isolates (CT3 and K49); two mixtures of CT3 or K49 with F3W4; and an autoclaved wheat control, applied at 20 kg ha . ...

Southwestern corn borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) damage and aflatoxin accumulation in maize.

Aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen, is produced by the fungus Aspergillus flavus Link: Fr. Drought, high temperatures, and insect damage contribute to increased levels of aflatoxin contamination in corn, Zea mays L. Plant resistance is widely considered a desirable method of reducing aflatoxin contamination. Germplasm lines with aflatoxin resistance have been developed. This investigation was under...

Toward elucidation of genetic and functional genetic mechanisms in corn host resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination

Aflatoxins are carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by some species in the Aspergillus genus, such as A. flavus and A. parasiticus. Contamination of aflatoxins in corn profusely happens at pre-harvest stage when heat and drought field conditions favor A. flavus colonization. Commercial corn hybrids are generally susceptible to A. flavus infection. An ideal strategy for preventing aflatoxin contamin...
